<itunes:summary>We share a hope that there are a bunch of Christian breweries out there crafting, experimenting, imagining, and sharing a Christian faith that is life-giving. These two friends will be talking to each other, interviewing other ecclesial brewers, and hopefully encouraging those who listen to journey towards a more beautiful life with God and the world.

<itunes:summary>One of the greatest insights of the Google-World is the freedom of Beta. A Beta is more than a product not-yet-ready-for-consumption, but a way of thinking, creating, and living. It owns being unfinished. It expects contribution, evolution, transparency. For a long time all of culture was under a spell. It believed in the myth of perfection. A closed process of creation. An established finality before completion. Before Beta - a mistake, glitch, virus, or crash was an embarrassment, a failure of the developers. Now these "bugs" are opportunities for learning and we thank people for pointing them out as they join in to improve.

What does all this Beta talk have to do with the Church? Everything. One of the greatest insight that the Emerging church movement has shared with the Church is this love for the Beta. A call for honesty, transparency, innovation, creative participation, and inspired imagination. When we look at the Church we think Beta, not because we begrudge what is there, but because we know God is not done, the body of Christ is in the Beta and it is beautiful.

In this conversation Philip Clayton, Spencer Burke, Florin, and myself explore this Google-ly metaphor and ask this question, "How far does the Beta go down?" Is our worship in the Beta? How about the church structures, or our theology? What about our own life of discipleship and our community? Maybe we could go one step further and say that the entire world is in the Beta? What if we even ask -Is God in the Beta?

While I am sure some will think we go too far in this conversation, it will also show how we plan on talking about a real God who was and is being revealed in Jesus Christ. Philip calls out some forms of progressive theology when he visited the Nick and Josh Podcast.nbsp; Thanks to Spencer and the ooze viral blogger crew for sharing the conversation.nbsp; If you blog and like free books you should join them!

<itunes:summary>Since I am a big fan of LOST, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to invite Chris Seay back on the podcast. Chris is a pastor in Houston and author of The Gospel According to LOST. In the conversation, we explore the biblical themes in LOST, the theme of science vs. faith, and we spend a little time delving into the philosophical Easter eggs left all over the island, including references to Teilhard de Chardin, Kierkegaard, and Locke. We could pick any number of these themes and do a whole podcast on them, and maybe we will.

Other books from Chris include:

The Gospel According to Tony Soprano: An Unauthorized Look into the Soul of TV's Top Mob Boss and His Family

The Gospel Reloaded: Exploring Spirituality and Faith in the Matrix

The Tao of Enron: Spiritual Lessons from a Fortune 500 Fallout

Thanks for all of your questions - I apologize if we didn't get to yours.

In the intro, we get a call from Pastor Bill from Middle Earth, who we get to meet at the Theology After Google conference, Tripp shrieks a few times like a LOTR rider, and we demonstrate we've forgotten a few hobbit names and where Middle Earth actually is. If anyone else from Middle Earth wants to give us a call: 210-787-1057. If you speak Elvish on the call, please provide a translation!

<itunes:summary>Fr. Richard Rohr returns to the podcast to discuss his latest book The Naked Now: Learning to See as the Mystics See, which offers an understanding of the Christian mystic tradition as a nondualistic way of seeing the moment. This is what Fr. Rohr says is the most important book that he has written to date.

Fr. Rohr is a Franciscan priest, founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque (which is hosting a conference called Emerging Christianity this spring with Shane Claiborne, Brian McLaren, and Diana Butler Bass), and the author of Everything Belongs and Things Hidden.

By listening to this podcast you will also find out:

Whether I convince Fr. Rohr to join Twitter.

Who Fr. Rohr's favorite mystic is.

The meaning of Advent for 2009 according to Fr. Rohr.

Not only that, but if you don't skip past the intro to the interview (which is always an entirely acceptable thing to do) you get to find out whether Tripp and I accept the ill-advised challenge coming from The Nick #38; Josh Podcast. Also, listen to Richard Rohr's first visit on HBC 41.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>What a treat we have this week!nbsp; None other than Emilie Townes, nbsp; ground breaking theologian, Baptist minister, and now Homebrewed Christianity guest.nbsp; Ever since I met her last March at the Transforming Theology conference I knew she needed to be on the podcast.nbsp; There I was able to interview her for a video series that will be released soon and in the process of conversing with her it was clear that she had a remarkable gift to communicate both her theological insights and passionate faith in thought-provoking ways.nbsp; She did not disappoint.

In the interview we discuss the development of Womanist theology, a piece of one of my favorite social ethics text - Womanist Ethics and the Cultural Production of Evil - and she gives bite size responses to the big 7 questions of theology discussed in Philip and my new book.

From the intro....

- Nickels of the N\J podcast has indeed confirmed that over the holidays he will be getting on skype to be issued an HBC whoopin @ paper, rock, scissors.

- This may be due to the sheer force of the HBC Deaconate.nbsp; Our refusal to use his real name and title of his book is seeping out into the world wide web.

- An example......Deacon Blundell tweeted "The Hopeless Skeptic by @nicholasfiedler is out http://bit.ly/92SCBk // looking forward to reading it." Notice the two jokes our Deacon has sent!!!!nbsp; Then Nickels is unable to contain himself and responds by correcting the misspelled title (as if it wasn't intentional).

- Deacon Blundell has his first piece of fiction out (correctly) titled, St. Peter's Brewery. Check it out (and specifically page 94!)

<itunes:summary>Traveling for Thanksgiving? Why not spend it with a few turkeys? Tripp and I cut up for a few minutes as usual, with fresh taunting directed toward our lovable rivals over at The Nick and Josh Podcast, then we turn to the topic du jour. This week, we're visited by James F. McGrath from the popular Exploring Our Matrix, professor of religion at Butler University, and author of The Only True God and The Burial of Jesus. Tripp and James tackle the diversity and complexity of monotheistic beliefs during the first century among Jews and within the upstart Jesus movement. Listen in on this great conversation with a great blogger and scholar. And Nick ndash; we're ready to throw down when you are. And by throw down we mean fight...with our fists (forming rocks in a Rock, Paper, Scissors competition)

Books to purchase (in this order)

Transforming Christian Theology by Philip Clayton in collaboration with Tripp Fuller

<itunes:summary>This week we have Julie Clawson on the podcast, a prolific blogger, emerging woman, and author of Everyday Justice. Julie's book challenges us all to love our global neighbors by practicing justice in our daily lives. She explains all of the systems of injustice we participate in ndash; issues like sex trafficking and the use of fossil fuels that go into our cheeseburgers and chocolate bars. She takes a positive approach to ginormous global problems by encouraging simple but significant changes in habits.

It's a very helpful book and an important book, a great podcast, and we'll be blogging about the chapters in it. Enjoy!</itunes:summary>

Bracken, S.J. is a retired Xavier University professor of theology, and author of many books on philosophical theology, including God: Three Who are One, which we discuss this week. I got a chance to read it for the Transforming Theology Theo-Blogger Consortium last spring.
We begin our conversation with Moltmann's theology and Joe explains how Alfred North Whitehead's philosophy provides a good framework for understanding the differentiated unity in the Trinity and in creation, which speaks meaningfully of life in a pluralistic 21st century world.
Other writings mentioned:
Subjectivity, Objectivity, and Intersubjectivity: A New Paradigm for Religion and Science
Trinity in Process, edited by Joseph A. Bracken and Marjorie Suchocki
Robert Wright's NYT article
Thanks to Deacon Gene Anderson and Kermit the Deacon for calling in this week. Be sure and check out The Christian Humanist Podcast.
Halloween might be over but we're still trick-or-treating by giving out free official Homebrewed stickers in exchange for your soul deacon badge-posting and calls to our listener line at 210-787-1057.

The interview will give you an idea of why we get excited about anything related to process philosophy. Next week, we continue to delve into it with Joseph Bracken, a Catholic trinitarian process theologian.

This is the second time Bob has joined us. He was a guest in the early days of Homebrewed, for a two-parter on suffering and meaning (Ep. 14 and Ep. 15).

<itunes:summary>This episode contains the story and theology of an evangelical recognizing that plurality and diversity is part of the Christianity faith rather than something that should be eliminated. Tripp and special guest interviewer Mike Raimer-Goodman caught up with John Franke at the recent Emergent Conversation with Jurgen Moltmann. Franke is a professor of theology at Biblical Seminary in Hatfield, PA and has a new book called Manifold Witness: the Plurality of Truth.

Questions discussed:

How do you write a book on truth that both your mainline friends and evangelical friends will appreciate?

What is a method for determining honest and faithful expressions of faith in ways that respect differences?

Can the term "biblical orthodoxy" be reclaimed and used in a positive and welcoming way?

We'll keep you updated on our upcoming episode on the theology of outlaw country music. It will happen.

Thanks to this week's featured Homebrewed Christianity Deacon, Mike Stavlund, for the phone call from the Moltmann event. I used my Google skills to find out if he uses the internet machine and found his blog.

She also teaches interdisciplinary studies, Twitters prolifically, and is the author of The Divine Decision: A Process Doctrine of Election.

In this episode, Tripp interviews Donna about how this "series of tubes" known as the internet enhances theological imagination. This particular discussion began when Tripp asked, "What kind of theological questions does social networking bring to mind?"

Additionally, listen to this if you want to know any of the following information:

How Donna got to sit on the Morpheus chair and the Matrix Ducati.

<itunes:summary>To say Terence Fretheim is a leading Old Testament scholar is an understatement. Professor Fretheim has literally written the book on creation. His scholarship represents a shift from the previous school, which elevates heilsgeschichte (salvation history) as the primary lens for interpreting the Old Testament. He argues instead for creation as the primary theme. We discuss his book God and World in the Old Testament, a less anthropocentric view of creation, and the characteristics of genuine relationship between God and the world. He's passionate about "a God who weeps, who gets angry, who rejoices . . . a God who is in genuine interaction with the world."

Homebrewed Christianity recommends these books by Terence Fretheim:

God and World in the Old Testament: A Relational Theology of Creation

The Suffering of God: An Old Testament Perspective

<itunes:summary>Ben Lowe is co-coordinator of Renewal, a grassroots student movement answering God's call to renew creation through prayer, service, and advocacy. There are lots of books coming out about "creation care", but this one, Green Revolution: Coming Together to Care for Creation, gets the official Homebrewed seal of approval. This is an extraordinary group and I'm very impressed with what they are doing. In this podcast we get into how this movement started, talk about how to begin the conversation in your campus ministry or congregation, and how to be compassionate towards other people with whom we share our home.

If you are involved in some form of student ministry and you have done some kind of work in the environment, give us a call and share your ideas with others. I often hear from ministers who are looking for ideas. Call us at 210-787-1057.

We mention a climate change bill, and I was actually in D.C. lobbying around the same time Ben was, the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454), that will significantly reduce carbon emissions in the U.S. It barely passed the House after being weakened significantly, and it is on the way to the Senate after the August recess. Stay tuned for updates from Homebrewed Christianity and watch for ways that you can help strengthen the bill and get it passed.

Praise for Green Revolution in the blogosphere:

<itunes:summary>This week, (I know...we always say this) is a very special Homebrewed Christianity Podcast. It's one of those moments where we visit that rummage sale that happens every 500 years and find some pearls of great price. It's John Calvin's 500th birthday. In this episode, Tripp interviews Paul Capetz, a progressive reformed theologian at United Seminary. Paul reflects on how Calvin has inspired him ndash; while rejecting calvinism as a label.

Tripp first met Paul at the recent Transforming Theology Conference at Claremont.

<itunes:summary>Len Sweet joins us this week for another outstanding podcast.nbsp; The first half of the podcast focuses on his new book "So Beautiful" in which you get Len being Sweet as he discusses the DNA of the church.nbsp; In doing so you get some refined and focused reflection on over-used and under-utilized buzz words in many church circles - MISSIONAL, RELATIONAL, and INCARNATIONAL.nbsp; Beyond the buzz lie the secret three-fold strand that moves the life of the church. (Other blog reviews of the book: 1,2,3,4,5)

In the second half of the interview Len breaks some big news about an upcoming partnership he has with Frank Viola called "a Jesus Manifesto." (No relation to the Jesus Manifesto blog) I don't want to steal his thunder, but let's say that it revolves a shared Christological concern of Frank and his that is directed at a number of pomo Christian provocateurs.nbsp; Len also explains his concern about the 'Red Letter Christians' and the recent focus on 'Social Justice' in the emerging church conversation.nbsp; And if that wasn't enough reason to listen, dig, and share this episode we conclude the conversation with a little bit we borrowed from Conan O'Brien - In the Year 3000 2020.

Thanks to Len for joining us and to you all for listening.nbsp; Until next time deacons....brew on!

<itunes:summary>The hermeneutics train keeps rolling this week with Tim Conder, founding pastor of Emmaus Way in Durham, North Carolina. Tim talks about his new book, Free for All, about approaching biblical interpretation as a community of faith.

Here's a taste:
The Bible, especially in times of great culture change, but always, the Bible is in need of liberation, and so we're trying to demonstrate how God's Spirit works in dramatic ways when a community is tasked with not just being passive listeners but co-interpreters and co-creators with whatever authority shapes their fellowship.
You bring a bias to the text. And where those biases become dangerous is when they're not identified.
One of the ways that we have a liberated reading of the text is to acknowledge our biases and to create diversity of voices so that those biases are balanced out.
Free for All: Rediscovering the Bible in Community by Tim Conder with Daniel Rhodes is available for pre-order and is due out August 1.

Next week, we keep the train rolling with Tim Conder of Durham, North Carolina's Emmaus Way.

Books and Essays by Ronald L. Farmer include:

Beyond the Impasse (Studies in American Biblical Hermeneutics)

Revelation (Chalice Commentaries for Today)

Jesus, Then and Now (contributor)

Creative Transformation, Summer 2008 (also includes articles from Alecia and Tripp Fuller!)

We also have a call from a deacon who tells us about starting an emergent cohort in a galaxy far, far away. We encourage all HBC deacons near and far to call in and leave us a message at 210-787-1057.

We weren't able to fit everything in the episode, but Tripp and I also have a little wager going on the 3-game series between the SF Giants and the LA Dodgers. If Tripp's team wins best of 3, he gets my doppelbock homebrew. If my team wins, I get his Rocky Patels.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Homebrewed Christianity celebrates its 50th episode, and there's no better way to do it than with Tony Jones, author of The New Christians, interviewing Dr. Bart Ehrman. Dr. Ehrman is the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and controversial author of several best-selling books, including God's Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important ndash; Why We Suffer, Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why, and his most recent Jesus, Interrupted: Revealing the Hidden Contradictions in the Bible (And Why We Don't Know About Them).

The two didn't get into too much detail about Bart's latest book, since biblical contradictions aren't new to Tony. They instead discuss Bart's motivations for writing his books that many find so challenging to faith in the authority of Scripture. Subjects that come up in the interview are philosophical hermeneutics, objectivity, inerrancy vs. infallibility, and the merciless Stephen Colbert.

Ehrman's recent Holy Week appearance on The Colbert Report: colbertnation.com

OK. We always say this, but this one is a must-listen.

We're thankful to Tony for lending us this fantastic audio for a very special 50th episode. He recorded the interview for his Beliefnet blog, "The New Christians" at blog.beliefnet.com/tonyjones

His new book is called Religionless Christianity: Dietrich Bonhoeffer In Troubled Times. Dr. Pugh talks with Tripp about the life of Bonhoeffer, shares some of the famous words from his Letters #38; Papers from Prison, and leaves us with how Bonhoeffer can inspire us today. He even inspires Tripp to consider, for about 30 seconds, joining the Hauerwasian Mafia.

As he was getting gunpowder rubbed into his beard before being burned at the stake, he supposedly said, "Salt me well, brothers. Salt me well!"

Glenn Jonas, our guest this week, is a religion professor at Campbell University, whom Tripp credits partially for his relationship with Alecia. Dr. Jonas shares his insights on the life of Huuml;bmaier, an important leader of the Anabaptist movement of the 16th century. He believes that Huuml;bmaier's historical significance would have rivaled Calvin's and Luther's had he not gotten torched.

Always good to hear from Deacon Brett Watson.

Pastor Daniel Harrell (Park Street Church, Boston) approaches the subject in his book Nature's Witness from the perspective that all truth is God's truth, and therefore scientific inquiry should be taken seriously. Not only should science be taken seriously ndash; discoveries about the natural world can inspire faith.

<itunes:summary>This week on Homebrewed Christianity, Fr. Richard Rohr discusses the Emerging Church, and the upcoming conference with Brian McLaren, Phyllis Tickle, and Shane Claiborne at his Center for Contemplation and Action.

We talk about the relationship between contemplation and action. Fr. Rohr says that the most important word in The Center for Action and Contemplation isn't "action" or "contemplation". It's the word "and". We talk about his book Things Hidden: Scripture as Spirituality and the balance between internal and external authority when interpreting scripture.

Ryan Parker at PopTheology.com shares another couple of film reviews: Slumdog Millionaire and Happy Go Lucky.

For information on the Emerging Church Conference, "the first large gathering of Roman Catholic, Mainline Protestant, Evangelical, and other Christians seeking to explore this emergence and convergence together," visit CACRadicalGrace.org.

"Utterly Humbled by Mystery", Fr. Rohr's "This I Believe" Essay on NPR.

Next week on Homebrewed Christianity is singer/songwriter Bill Mallonee and in the month of February, we'll be looking at different perspectives on evolution.

The guest this week is very special to me, and not only because she founded the organization that employs me. The Rev. Canon Sally Bingham gives us hope that people of faith are starting to take climate change seriously. She founded Interfaith Power #38; Light convincing a handful of Episcopal churches in California to purchase wind energy.

Today, the organization represents 5,000 congregations in 29 states. Recently she received an honorary doctorate from Sewanee and was featured on The Weather Channel's Forecast Earth Hot List, along with Google and T. Boone Pickens.

<itunes:summary>Ed Cyzewski joins us this week on the HBC podcast, fresh off his whirlwind blog tour for his newest book "Coffee House Theology: Reflecting on God in Everyday Life."nbsp; I blogged about the book previously, so I will just say that Ed keeps getting cooler in my mind and this interview was tons of fun - SO much fun I had to edit about an hour and a half of it out. As you will hear in the interview, Ed and I are far apart from each other along traditional baptist dividing lines, yet we had a passionate and engaging conversation about theology, mission, and his book.nbsp; I am very grateful to have talked with Ed and am glad to have him as a Baptimergent friend. I hope you enjoy the conversation.

I would also like to thank baptimergent Dave from South Carolina for giving the HBC podcast a super shout out. Keep on brother. We appreciate feedback from our listeners, even if you deduct a star from our rating on itunes because we do not always use complete sentences. Thanks for caring enough to listen and respond. Brew On!

He will discuss the bail out package, his new book "Finding our way again," the "Everything Must Change" tour, Bill Maher's new movie "Religulous," how troublesome Christian radio is, voting, and how a new kind of Christian thinks about selecting a president.

Heath and Chad's conversation is a good one and we hope you enjoy it.nbsp; Heath will take a PoMo stab at Truth with a capitol "T" so listen closely as he gets busy.

He describes his experience on 9\11 at Trinity Church Wall St. where he was with Rowan Williams and the ensuing ministry that took place at St. Paul's Chapel right in front of the Twin Towers.nbsp; Having met Fred at an ISM event and heard this story in person I was thrilled when Steve Knight offered to share this interview with us. <itunes:summary>This week we are joined by New Testament scholar and professor at Brite Divinity School Warren Carter for the first part of a discussion on the gospel of John's relationship to the Roman empire.nbsp; If you are a fan of his previous work on the gospel of Matthew (like me) then even you may have been suspicious of connecting much of anything political to the gospel of John and you may have even kept that gospel as the 4th gospel on your reading list because it is so often associated with escapist spirituality, but Dr. Carter does an awesome job describing the two dominate understandings of John and articulating his own.nbsp; Having read the book, I can say that it is worth the read if you are familiar the NT studies and the particular issues surrounding John.nbsp; If the podcast interests you let me suggest a great introduction and resource guide for the average interested reader who wants to discover more about the Roman empire's relationship to the NT.nbsp; Warren Carter's "The Roman Empire and the New Testament: An Essential Guide" does it better than any other book I have read.nbsp; If you are interested in his work on Matthew check out his commentary here.nbsp; I really hope you all listen, enjoy, and share this podcast.

<itunes:summary>This week all-star philosopher John Caputo is our guest as he shares his philosophical and theological journey through his career.nbsp; If you are already a Caputo fan you will hear how he managed to make his more recent theological turn.nbsp; If you aren't a fan yet, then you will be.nbsp; He shares how an early love for Heidegger and Aquinas got him into philosophy and eventually it was Kierkegaard that helped him figure out how to read Derrida.nbsp; From there he explores a couple theological doctrines inlight of his philosophical reflection.nbsp; Here is a list of all his books. I would suggest 'What Would Jesus Deconstruct,' 'On Religion,' or 'Philosophy and Theology' for a new Caputoite and 'The Weakness of God' for the more theologically engaged.

This week we are joined agian, as promised back in episode 7, by E. Scott Jones. E. Scott Jones is anbsp; philosopher, blogger, and minister at the Cathedral of Hope in Oklahoma City and has a PhD in Philosophy from Oklahoma University.nbsp; Last we used audio from a lecture he gave at WFUDS and said he would be back to answer your questions and rock it out in a dialogue.nbsp; Below are links from the episode.

- The Ethiopian Eunuch Sermon here

- Go here for Scott's sermons from the Romans series and the Easter Zingger!

- Ok Rep. Sally Kearn'srecent debacle has gone all around. Here is Scott Jones talking to Sally Kearn on TV, it is something.

This week is the first one that I did all the tech stuff and well it wasn't easy but should be easier next time.nbsp; The interview and intro totaled 1:45 so I did some significant editing. I may update the post with the other 22 minutes of the interview if I get inspired.</itunes:summary>

Here is the first episode of this discussion, so if you didn't listen last week check it out first.nbsp; I am at the beach with my youth group so finding new links to put on the podcast didn't happen.nbsp; So here are the ones from last week.nbsp; I will say two of my adult sponsors and three high school students spent three hours of the late night early morning on the problem of evil at the beach, so after this podcast you can impress your friends at a late night conversation.nbsp; See you all next week!
This week Dr. Bob Mesle is our guest for part two of a two part discussion of Suffering and Meaning. Dr. Mesle is professor of Philosophy and Religion at Graceland University and author of a number of books including my favorite introduction to Process Theology and also the Philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. You can download Melse's article, "Teaching about Suffering and Meaning" from Creative Transformation.
I contacted Dr. Mesle when the internet was abuzz over the NT Wright and Bart Ehrman blog-o-logue on God and problem of evil. They both have published books recently dealing with this issue (here and here).

<itunes:summary>This week we have professor Craig Atwood on the show for a great conversation about a good'ole heretic Jan Hus. I don't want to steal the historical thunder of Atwood, but I am confident that for those who listen you will be inspired by a heretic from Church History who was killed by the church on a burning stake on behalf of his faith. Hus' faithfulness to the Gospel led him to flaming out as a heretic, martyr, and inspiring the Reformation.

We begin the discussion with Atwood answering a question from a listener who called our hotline on divinely sanctioned violence. If you have a question or comment give us a holla. 210-787-1057

<itunes:summary>The Church Basement Roadshow is traveling around the nation this summer. This week you will hear Professor Hawthorne (Tony Jones, author of The New Christians) and Brother Duke (Doug Pagitt, author of A Christianity Worth Believing) barnstorm Homebrewed Christianity. The CBR has a blog now at belief.net where they will be uploading videos and all sort of revival goodness, like the Professor strumming out a revival song. Chad and I were unprepared for the high volume of revival power these two brothers were going to bring, but luckily we used some 21st century technology to edit out being struck dumb by the 1908 revival spirit.

This is an awesome, fun, and enticing interview that I think you all will enjoy. Not only will you have to pull off the side of the road and get right with God, but you will begin to have a hankering for a big chunk of lettuce covered in the Balm of Gilead.

UPDATE: If you are a part of a team hosting a stop on the revival, Chad made a little audio add with the Professor and Brother Duke inviting everyone to come.nbsp; Feel free to download it and use it to help spread the word of this train of hope-filled glory making its may across the country.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In this week's episode, I chat with San Antonio artist Paul Soupiset. I blogged here about getting the opportunity to meet Paul at Ruta Maya Coffeehouse back at the beginning of April. We've been keeping this one under our hats for a while and I'm really excited about exposing this little bit of homebrewed Christianity to the world.

Tripp opens the show by telling stories about his cohort friend and our charismatic listener, Cathryn Thomas. He also declares his love for legendary singer-songwriter and all around Vigilante of Love, Mr. Bill Mallonee.

Paul and I talk about his illustrations in Jesus for President by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw, his 2007 Lentenblog, his pastor Gordon Atkinson, a.k.a. Real Live Preacher, and the Prayer Labyrinth he and his church recently constructed using only native materials.

We met right after he recorded another podcast promoting Danny Gregory's upcoming book, An Illustrated Life: drawing inspiration from the private sketchbooks of artists, illustrators and designers, which features Paul's artwork. The book is due out in October and you can pre-order now.
Below: from Soupablog.com, an unused illustration Paul created for Jesus for President.

		<itunes:summary>This week you will hear two friends talking.nbsp; Tim Conder of Emmaus Way and author of Church in Transition will be doing most of the interviewing of Doug Pagitt from Solomon's Porch and fellow Emergent Village leader.nbsp;nbsp; They were both in Winston a few months ago for a church planting conference and I thought it would be cool to have them interview each other about their new books coming out, but after we got started they never made their way to Tim's upcoming book on hermeneutics (Free for All) and instead Tim got Doug to focus on his new book, A Christianity Worth Believing.nbsp;

I think this conversation is fun, insight-filled, and theologically intriguing.nbsp; I hope you enjoy it.

<itunes:summary>E. Scott Jones is a minister at the Cathedral of Hope in Oklahoma City and has a PhD in Philosophy from Oklahoma University. His lecture 'The Theology of Pizzazz" (here in text) was recorded at Table Talk, a student group Chad and I helped start while we were at Wake Forest University Divinity School. In the lecture he discusses Al Mohler's comments on the gay gene, the born gay argument, the question of identity in the LGBT community, the connection of freedom and diversity in Christian theology with the LGBT community, and some commentary on Ok Rep. Sally Kearn'srecent debacle. Here is Scott Jones talking to Sally Kearn on TV, it is something.

Scot said he would do in interview with us in an upcoming podcast so it is our hope that our listeners will email us some questions to use. Anything that is asked in a respectful way is fair game. We don't expect everyone to agree with Scott, since he does like Hauerwas too much, but after hearing his lecture the discussion may be framed in a way it normally isn't in the church. Scott is a great dude and I am pretty confident that we can have a conversation with a character that isn't often found in the church's discussion.

Homebrewed Christianity has a phone number: 210-787-1057.nbsp; So call the number and leave your question for Scott or well anything you want us to hear.nbsp; If it is interesting and clean we will try to put it in upcoming podcasts.

<itunes:summary>On this episode Jonathan Wilson Hartgrove of the Rutba House rocks it out with Chad. He shares a bit out of his new book on race in America entitled 'Free to be Bound.' Since all I did was blab in the intro I will say that Chad did a great job and I am still thinking about some of Jonathan's insights about the Church's connection to American culture, the White church's misunderstanding of the language in the Black church, and the connection between apocalyptic hope and suffering love.

FYI:

- we still have not heard from Rush Limbaugh but Chad has said that he would join Operation Chaos through absentee balloting here in NC if Rush would indeed talk with us.

- here is some of Chad's reflections from his AT hiking trip

- Chad posted the picture of Bill Leonard's new emergent look he has been sporting at the WFU div school.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This was an awesome conversation Chad and I had with Brian McLaren. We talk a bit about his Deep Shift tour and his most recent book (Everything Must Change), but mostly we talk about how to understand the kingdom of God and its relationship to the church today. It was a ton of fun and we are very grateful to Brian for getting on the phone with us. The conversation was the Monday after Easter so we end up getting sidetracked and discuss Easter and its significance for us today.

I wanted to put a poll in the post seeing who thinks a presidential candidate with Jesus as their preacher could win, but I apparently can't get one of these plugins to work.nbsp; So instead I want to again offer Rush Limbaugh the opportunity to talk to Chad and I.nbsp; We would even make sure at least half the interview was about cigars.nbsp; After you listen to Brian you will hear why you should have him on your show. So Rush, holla back and we can talk.

<itunes:summary>This week I talk Tony Jones, Emergent Village guru in residence. Today is his 40th birthday so I thought I would let Tony know that I am glad he was born. I think the conversation is pretty good and it should inspire you to check out his new book, which I liked and Greg Horton didn't, but either way it is a good read.

Here is our buddy Pastor Deacon Fred's church and as you will see his voice would bring a different perspective, as would Rush Limbaugh who Chad and I both listen to, so Rush if you want to get on our podcast and talk to all 28 people who subscribed email me and I'll fit it in.

Next Week is Brain McLaren or we will bump him a week if Rush gets in touch.

UPDATE: Tony Posts on the Hauerwasian Mafianbsp;</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This is the first of two episodes taken from a conversation between Bill Leonard, Doug Pagitt, Tim Conder, Zach Roberts, and myself. I mostly just listened in to Bill Leonard, the Dean of Wake Forest University's School of Divinity and professor of church history, have a fascinating conversation with Doug Pagitt and Tim Conder about the Emergent movement and American religion.

If you are thinking about a Divinity school, Wake Forest University was a great place for both Chad and I. If you have questions about it email either one of us and we will be happy to answer questions and if you come visit I will gladly get you a cigar and talk about the school.</itunes:summary>
