What does coming to Jesus look like today? We may not have the answer but we do have a seriously fun and enlightening conversation.

During the American Academy of Religion a herd of theology nerds gathered in the home of Mark Scandrette – Jesus Dojo extraordinaire – for some live Homebrewed Christianity podcast fun. Daniel Kirk (New Testament Prof at Fuller Theological Seminary) and Philip Clayton (Philosophical Theologian and Dean of Claremont School of Theology) were our featured contributors but the ~~crowd~~ Deacons who gathered made the entire experience a blast. On top of the podcast we all enjoyed the wonderful food provided by the Scandrette family, the huge bottle of Bullet Bourbon from Rebekah, 3 amazing homebrews from Kirk, and some great questions at the end.

“What Would Paul Do?” That’s the question and Peter Rollins and Barry Taylor are here to answer it Biblically. This is a seriously fun conversation from the Soularize cconference that I thought would be the perfect to share at the beginning of the year.

For those who don’t read atheist political philosophy…Paul is back, popular, and getting all sorts of attention. In our conversation we play out a number of these Pauline insights and then tackle a bunch of questions being asked in the church today. If you are interested in the philosophical discussion there is no better place to begin than St. Paul Among the Philosophers which is introduced and edited by Jack Caputo. It includes chapters by Zizek and Badiou (philosophers) and then responses form Christian scholars from across the disciplines.

Christian Piatt, author of Banned Questions about Jesus & Banned Questions about the Bible stops by for a chat about church, Jesus, faith, the Bible and the important stuff in life. As a minister’s husband Christian has been part of planting a progressive Disciples of Christ church in Colorado. He Tweets, he blogs, and facebooks.

Most important of all Christian put together a killer collection of thinkers, writers, and ministers to answer a some dangerous and banned questions about Jesus…the kind of questions in which the asking and the answering can be costly. Each author had just a few paragraphs to answer the question and they did so right next to others so the reader can compare, contrast, yell, and go ‘hmm.’ Not only was Christian wise enough to ask Tripp about Jesus’ sexual fantasias but he also brought some ‘A’ game to the podcast. Hope you enjoy the conversation!

Neil Elliot talks to Tripp about Paul, Empire and the Arrogance of Nations. In this conversation Neil helps us set the book of Romans in its historical, political, cultural, and religious context. When Romans becomes theologically alive again it has a word to speak about the Imperial situation in today’s politics.

Neil was an early pioneer in the rather busy academic world of Paul and Politics. One of the things I really appreciate about the conversation with Neil is his concern about congregations, working ministers, and Christians wrestling with the theological vision of Paul as it is re-expanded in light of new scholarship. It is easy to do scholarship without thinking of those to whom the texts one speaks of are scared, dear, and direction for ones living and it is also pretty easy to know what is going on in the academic world and not try to bring it down to the grassroots level but Neil rocks it on all fronts. I really hope you really enjoy the conversation and if you are a Paul hater maybe you will decide to give him a second look.

Radical Political Theology with Clayton Crockett

Clayton Crockett tells that you can’t go home again. The world of religion and politics has changed so radically that the old definitions and boundary markers are nearly unrecognizable – and even less helpful.

Clayton Crockett is Associate Professor and Director of Religious Studies at the University of Central Arkansas. His work focuses on postmodern theology, Continental philosophy of religion, psychoanalytic theory and theoretical issues concerning religion and politics.

In the 1960s, the strict opposition between the religious and the secular began to break down, blurring the distinction between political philosophy and political theology. This collapse contributed to the decline of modern liberalism, which supported a neutral, value-free space for capitalism. It also deeply unsettled political, religious, and philosophical realms, forced to confront the conceptual stakes of a return to religion. (from the book description)

Westphal is a long time philosophy prof from Fordham University and has now reached the status of emeritus. Merold is a top notch philosopher and committed evangelical who thinks deep and wrestles faithfully. He publishes regularly and also has an awesome book for a general audience. A philosopher of religion from the continent (that means Europe) with a sweet accent and theological insights to drop in your ears is on the podcast. His name… Ingolf Dalferth. His game… Hermeneutical Theology. Dalferth is one of my professors and Dr. Deacon Hall’s dissertation adviser at Claremont. In the podcast we will discuss religion, philosophy, theology, atonement, biblical authority, hermeneutics, revelation, Barth, Schleiermacher, Caputo, Jungel, and more.

Here’s Dalferth’s books. I give a big’ole recommendation to Philosophy and Theology. I imagine you can guess the content but it is an amazing survey of all the different relationships philosophy and theology have taken. I can promise that it is both an introduction and an eye opener.
