Radical Orthodoxy & Christian Materialism! Justin Klassen on [podcast ep. 164]

September 10, 2012 by Tripp Fuller 19 Comments

It is time for some philosophical theology in the genre of Radical Orthodoxy.  As many Theology Nerd Throwdown listeners know I regularly repeat John Caputo jokes about R.O. so this episode is dedicated to all the Deacons who have complained about such humor.  I really enjoyed chatting with Justin and hope y’all enjoy listening in and sharing the Brew!

Justin has previously penned two awesome guest posts discussing Christian materialism…Christian Matter & Life Interrupted. He is the
author of the recent book, The Paradox of Hope: Theology and the Problem of Nihilism (Cascade, 2011), and co-editor of a forthcoming volume on Charles Taylor’s account of modern secularity.

Tripp and Bo,

I contacted James Alison and he's game to come on the podcast. I sent the details to you on Facebook. He's a Girardian theologian and I think it would be a great conversation to explore.

Not enough Christian materialism! Fun interview though.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and for the great conversation, Tripp. I second Michael's comment that James Alison would be an outstanding guest!

Tripp and Bo, would you consider having James Alison on to represent Girard more thoroughly?

Hmm. I thought this was really interesting, though I don't get a sense from this interview just what is so problematic about RO to the Homebrewed set. I know that during these interviews your purpose is not to rip them up TNT style--maybe you guys could do a TNT on RO, and one on Post-liberalism (kind of like your original Liberal Master Class) to give those of us a bit newer to the conversation kind of a summary of what these things are, and why the Process and Post-Structuralist folk find them so problematic.

Good interview.  It's nice to hear some conversations with folks closer to my own theological tendencies, though of course I enjoy HBC and TNT specifically because I do differ so much from Bo and Tripp.  Keep it up!

Having recently read The Scape Goat I really admire Justin's communication skills. I feel it's wonderful content for postmoderns to explore, Justin does a great job clarifying Girard's theory. Hopefully it will lead others to explore mimesis and work with it in theological contexts.

 @MichaelDBobo seconded.

memesis/ scapegoating/ imitation has got so much theological milage ahead of it.

@philstyle McLaren's latest book JMBM touches on it, but I have yet to find more. I know James Alison (http://www.jamesalison.co.uk/) has expanded Girard's work on http://girardianlectionary.net/ but I'm not sure how far reaching his work is?Any other names you know about?

Here is the best Girard resource: http://www.imitatio.org/

Tonnes of papers and articles.

Raymond Schwager is a good author to follow up on.

Rebecca Adams bring a feminist perspective to Girardian theology.

@trippfuller great guest. Interesting how the discussion was all Milbank/Girard. No grilled Barth?

@trippfuller Drop the Radical Orthodoxy, double-down on the Christian Materialism and I'm with you. Can't have everything we want, I guess.
