Whips, Tables, & Hermeneutics oh Kirk!

July 16, 2012 by Tripp Fuller 14 Comments

Bo and I reunite the bromance in the Homebrewed Bat Cave after some summer vacationing.  There were some brews, delicious cigars, HBC Deacon Shout Outs, & two very giggly theology nerds.  We had plans to respond to a respond to a bunch of awesome Deacon sent questions…BUT the good Dr. Daniel Kirk got us distracted.

Kirk recently blogged about a past episode of TNT “Nerd Out: Leaving Church, Packing Heat, and Metaphysical Violence” and had some pretty serious questions.  In his post “Empire & Cross” where he asks:

So, my lingering question for the metaphysics of the non-violent, non-coercive God is this: what do we make of the other parts of the story that make Jesus, and Jesus’ God, look like those forces of coercive power we otherwise see Jesus repudiating?

  • Are those simply bad readings of the passages in question?
  • Or, do we exercise a revisionist hermeneutic in light of [parts of] the Gospels?

Bo and I attempted to respond.  We definitely had fun…so much fun I ended up telling a story about explosive bowels.  We hope you enjoy it!

NOW Kirk I have a challenge for you: A Homebrewed Brew-Off!!! Next semester when you come to SoCal for a Fuller visit we shall do a little Podcast Live and the visiting Deacons shall be bringing or voting on their favorite Homebrewed Beer.  Consider yourself challenged.

I just listened to this. You guys did a decent job trying to advocate nonviolence and all of the confusion between self-defense and nonviolence. I was about to comment that I think it's ridiculous to act as if oppressed minorities do not have the right to fight for liberation through armed struggle. However, I went back to Bo's post and saw that he supported that. I really think this the major question. Violence is sometimes justified, particularly in the face of injustice.

I think I would agree with Malcolm X who said, 'we're nonviolent with those who are nonviolent and violent towards those who are violent". I suppose you guys would disagree but self-defense and self-preservation seems like a basic human right. I think another major problem with some of these discussions is the moral equivalence you sometimes hear about all violence. For example, say a husband is beating his wife. If the wife defends herself and beats the shit out of him and runs away it seems absurd to act like she sinned or as if she disobeyed Jesus. Isn't that just intelligent?

Someone once told me they rejected pacifism because of radical feminists. Isn't it suspicious that men in power advcoate nonviolence and tell women to be nonviolent in turn?

The question raised to me after discussion about this TNT was, "how do we understand 'fear of God' with respect to a non-violent God? What would/does it mean?"

I'm not sure what the answer is. Though, my thinking goes along: living the transformed life is living with the fear of God, working out faith with fear and trembling...because of the responsibility inherent in it, with the ambiguity that can be there in figuring out how to act in the individual circumstance.  Something like that. Any thoughts? Should I post this on Bo's blog post too? More deacons, more thoughts..
