Extremely White Male & Incredibly Homophobic

January 10, 2012 by Bo Sanders 20 Comments

The news is wild these days! Its almost as if there is a cultural shift underway!
Let me just highlight 4 news stories from the past week:

1) The Pope: Gay marriage threatens humanity’s future

2) Pastor Joel Osteen to Oprah: Homosexuality Is Sin — But Gay People Will Get Into Heaven

3) Rick Santorum: A Straight Dad In Prison Is Better Than Two Gay Dads Who Aren’t

4) Pastor Mark Driscoll’s book on Marriage hits the shelves

It is interesting that all four of these stories have come to my attention in the past week. What most people will focus on is whether there is a Bible verse to back up what they are saying or not.

What needs to be stated before that is two-fold:

  • All four are white males. Somebody may ask “are you implying that their gender or race somehow diminishes their right to speak with authority?” and I would answer “No – I just think that it is worth pointing it out in case later we wanted to examine how people come to power and in what ways authority is constructed, bestowed, or recognized.”
  • When you have the leader of all the world’s catholics, a guy who is renowned for not speaking up about anything or coming down on anyone, a presidential candidate, and one of the most influential evangelical pastors in America saying the same thing… one of a couple of things has to cross your mind.

Either
a) they are all sticking up for the truth or
b) they are all sticking up for an antiquated perspective of the past

The reason that this issue has grabbed my attention is that many are calling it ‘The Last Taboo”. In the past 2 centuries, the issues of race (civil rights) and gender (women’s lib) have advanced to the point the if anyone held an opinion from a century ago about either issue – the people around them would say “what is wrong with you?” or “wake up man, its the 21st century.”

I asked Tony Jones, Lauren Winner and Phyllis Tickle about this issues last year.  Only Phyllis was willing to tackle it.

No matter which side of this thing you are on, it is worth noting that the ‘last taboo’ is predicted to be the worst and most vicious. The problem with the last of anything is that when it is over … it is really over.  We tackled the race issue, we overcame the gender barrier, and now the sexuality issue is front and center.  We can’t go back. This is the last taboo. Once we have dealt with this, there are no more big ones to fall. This is kinda it.*

I just think that it is worth noting A) who is framing the conversation and B) who is charge of the information and how the process is to be handled.  There might be more going on here than simply the rightness or the wrongness of any given issue or the interpretation of 6 bible verses.

This will most likely be decided in our lifetime. Denominations will split over it. The future of the faith will be challenged because of it. Like race and gender before it, history will evaluate how we participate in it.

* somebody might say ‘economics’ or some form of disparity, but that is not really in the same category as it is not inherently value laden .

I'd love to weigh in with a prediction. Here's what's coming after the gay issues...at least I hope so: Understanding Disability aright. (In fact the trajectory has been in place for a while considering the dates of Americans with Disabilities Act and the Americans with Disabilities Education Act.) This group is among the weakest and most oppressed. Yet, it is not, as many assume, a minority population. Disability is actually something we will all encounter, if we live long enough. Our, culture, and our Church as gotten it backwards, and all wrong. My interview with Amos Yong is forthcoming, so stay tuned.

I think that the "Last Taboo" is attempting to signify that it is the last of things that the Bible addresses like this that society has not dealt with toward liberation. I could be wrong, but I think that is all it is meant to signify ... and certainly not that work in areas of race and gender are in anyway 'settled' or 'over'. thanks for all the feedback everybody! -Bo

Hi Bo. Thanks for your perspective. Regardless of the varied views still floating about with respect to human sexuality, I can assure you this is not "The Last Taboo."

We have miles before we sleep until racism and sexism is behind us, but yep, heterosexism is the next front in the struggle for equality. Well done, Bo.

Did you actually read the Pope's speech? The only specifics mentioned are embryonic stem cells and sex-selected abortion. Gay marriage isn't even mentioned once. The Daily News article tells me a lot about what the author thinks, very little about what the Pope actually said. Here is the speech: http://press.catholica.va/news_services/bulletin/news/28642.php?index=28642&lang=en#TRADUZIONE%20IN%20LINGUA%20INGLESE And here is an article calling lazy journalists and bloggers to task: http://www.getreligion.org/2012/01/gay-marriage-a-threat-to-journalisms-future/ Read both.

Richard, I really appreciate that! When we first did that Christian Unity TNT answering the question about Driscoll, I took a little guff from some of my more progressive friends that I was 'being silly' or 'making too big of a deal out of it'. I simply responded "You don't know where I am from ... there, it is a real thing." So thank you for the affirmation. Blessing today - Bo

Thanks for the clarification. With it, I would tend toward agreement with you. BTW, I really appreciate what you guys have been bringing to the table through the podcasts and website. It's been very challenging and thought provoking for me and fills a theological conversation gap for me as a midwest pastor in an independent church. Keep on keeping' on. And I absolutely concur on the challenge and necessity of affirming those that are still "in the hole." Your podcast about ecumenicism with fundamentalists hit on the struggles I encounter in dealing with pastors that won't collaborate ecumenically because some of the other churches have female pastors, etc.

I'd be interested in your optimism for labeling this the "last" of anything. Racism is hardly in the rearview mirror, economics are very value driven (even if the values aren't as explicit at times). Women are still less respected in the public and private sphere than men. But maybe I'm misunderstanding your emphasis. Is the main thrust of your point on the word "taboo" (i.e. it is not socially acceptable to verbalize or practice a stance or action)?

You are right that we are not 'over' racism or that women are treated equal. You are also right that "taboo" is the key word here. I appreciate the clarification

And kind of like what Tripp riffed on in his identity politics rants, the danger is progressives simply dismissing the lagging, behind the times portion of the population, leaving them to their own devices, hence "Open and Affirming" congregations are not exactly so to someone with a leftover Bush 04 bumper sticker on their pick up truck. It's almost like a certain part of the population climbed out of the hole and took the ladder with them. I don't have any answers, but there has to be some more go between, and initiative from the progressive end of the spectrum.

Maybe not the best title for a sequel! Nice catch on picking up that trend in the news the past week or so, I failed to pick up the strength the current at this particular moment. It is nice living on the east coast where people actually will say "“what is wrong with you?” or “wake up man, its the 21st century.” if these issues are brought up, but there's also the danger of not engaging the rest of the population who is still struggling with this. I had a hard time convincing my friend Mark Driscoll was a real person.
