Reframing Sexuality

February 21, 2011 by Tripp Fuller 5 Comments

Brian Ammons is a Duke professor, progressive Baptist church planter, blogger, tweeter, and Big Tent Christianity veteran (as in he was at both!).  This is one of his talks from Big Tent on reframing sexuality.  Soon you will see him and Richard Rohr talking it up too!!!

Wow is right. What an amazing young man. What courage he has. What a cost he has paid none of us, like me, can ever know. My empathy is and always has been with people who have been born different from me in many ways. My heart breaks for those who are mentally challenged. Those who have been born a cripple in mind, body and spirit. For those whose sexual oreintation is not like mine. For those shy individuals who need help but for whatever reason cannot make themselves seek the help that they need. For those who struggle to know themselves and to love themselves. I could go on forever but I can sum it up by saying I have always been for the "under dog." They get my tears. They get my love. They receive whatever I have to give. The challenge I received from this wonderful video is to become and to help in the process of what was suggested, "it is the work of the community and church to unbind and set free" !!!!!!!!!!!! "Unbind him and set him free" has rung in my heart for ages. It is my cry coming from my own experience of longing to loosen the ties that did bind me. Like the speaker, I too have known resurrection after resurrection and each time life became more beautiful for me. Not that I did not continue to have bad times and many struggles but for me I knew always that I was and am not alone now or in the future. I an so thankful all those "in the church" who helped me to loose the things that have bound me. "I am free, I'm free at last." That is the call I wish to have for myself and the call I wish to help others to give voice to. Let's all of us in the church learn how we can best become helpers in the action of unbinding !!!!!
