On Acts of God

May 4, 2010 by Chad Crawford 1 Comment

Rick Perry,  the sometimes secessionist governor of Texas, my beloved home-state, dabbled in theology yesterday to explain the cause of the worst oil spill in history.

‘From time to time, there are going to be things that occur that are acts of God that cannot be prevented,’ Perry said. [Source]

‘Act of God’ is actually a legal phrase used to describe catastrophic events that cannot be blamed on human beings. It’s a phrase that we need to do away with entirely, and certainly cannot be applied to an oil spill.

Acts of God are life-giving.
