I will tell you what is dropping…..what I have been working on the last six months, Transforming Christian Theology, the Book. I collaborated with Philip Clayton on this engaging paper diddy of theological goodness. We were joined by Tony Jones in the preface where he calls me Philip’s Sancho Panza.
Any way, you should pre-order this book right now, so you get it in your hands ASAP. You may be saying to your self, sure Tripp wants us to buy his book, but how are we to know that he isn’t just writing this blog plea out of his egocentric desire to sell more of his own book? Well I don’t have a good answer for your suspicious internal monologue, but Leron Shults, John Cobb, Phyllis Tickle, and Brian McLaren have something to say!
“Philip Clayton is one of the world’s leading philosophical theologians. In this new book, he calls for a transformation of theology…for a theology that transforms by radically engaging the concrete and practical concerns of both church and society. Pointing to significant movements within the Christian church, as well as shifts in late modern culture, Clayton clearly shows that the time is right for challenging old divisions such as ‘evangelical’ and ‘liberal.’ A welcome call for and contribution to transforming theology!”

“We all know that the once dominant form of Protestantism in this country is fading to the sidelines of society. In this book one of America’s premier theologians seriously and passionately writes for ordinary Christians, inviting them to become their own theologians. He also shows how they can do so. If a hundred thousand members of our old-line denominations take this book seriously and follow its suggestions, there is yet hope for renewal. Understanding and support from denominational leadership would also help.”

“Straight-forward and tantalizingly thorough, Transforming Christian Theology is the first volume to describe in a highly accessible and concrete way how Christian groups of any size or circumstance can locate and amend themselves theologically. This is, in sum, a very, very user-friendly Traveler’s Guide to largely uncharted territory.”
Phyllis Tickle (Podcast Here)
Author of The Great Emergence
‘How can an important book of theology be so delightful to read? How can a top-drawer theologian have such a high level of respect for ‘normal’ Christians that they are seen as partners in the work of transforming theology? How can Philip Clayton make the idea of big-tent, progressive Christianity so believable and attractive that one can imagine Evangelicals, Charismatics, Mainliners, and Roman Catholics having a meal and joyfully discussing it together? There’s only one way to find out, open up Transforming Christian Theology and start reading now.‘ Brian D. McLaren, author/speaker/activist (brianmclaren.net, Podcast Here and Here)

We had Philip Clayton speak here in Ottawa in early November. Philip got us advance copies of the book to read in advance of the seminar. It is an excellent book. The theological conversation it is helping to start will be welcome in many congregations. This is Clayton at his most accessible. Thanks to Tripp for getting into this more practical format. We'll be using Philip's 7 questions which he outlines in the book as our theme for Lent in 2010.
