@ C.Reed I understand the alienating part but I think that whatever that number is is getting smaller. Even at the SBC convention they didn't get a bunch yells supporting the motion to get mark driscoll merch out of life way because he curses and drinks. If the number is smaller in the SBC then it bound to be getting smaller elsewhere.....Of course I dropped the F bomb in my war song so I guess I have little interest in keeping the offended people happy. Outside of churchianity this conversation and concern is laughable.

@ Knight the album is electronica but much more than that. He made the album with Josh the Caedmon's keyboard player.

Ohhh and this song is not the strongest musically or lyrically. If you didn't freak out about a little curse word their are a couple of of songs with more 'offensive' theological ideas.

I think Webb is alienating his audience more by playing techno music (instead of alt-folk-rock) than he is by swearing once or twice. Is the whole album electronica?! I've only heard the one song, so it makes me wonder ...

You'll find this interesting, Trip.

You've seen that people are comparing this song to Tony Campolo's "shit spiel" that he did all the time in the 80's. I understand that Tony Campolo was blacklisted at Campbell University a long time ago by President Wiggins for using that "offensive" word the last time he was on campus. Derek was at Campbell a few months ago, and I think it'll be his last. He didn't curse, but I think that some of the things he said to the students between songs didn't set well with the administration.

This brings up an interesting issue: is it worth it to use offensive language to get your point across if you know that it will alienate others and likely prevent them from hearing your message? Granted, Jesus was unapologetically offensive at times-- but DW aint Jesus. Maybe Derek needs Tony to be on hand at all of his shows to explain the phenomenon that Christians are sometimes more rialed up about the fact that he said shit than with all the judgmentalism and complacency in the church.
