Balthasar Hübmaier, Another Flaming Heretic with Dr. Glenn Jonas: Homebrewed Christianity 46

March 10, 2009 by Chad Crawford 4 Comments

balthasar-hubmaierWhich heretic had the greatest final words ever before being burned alive? That would be Balthasar Hübmaier, whose birthday is today, March 10. As he was getting gunpowder rubbed into his beard before being burned at the stake, he supposedly said, ‘Salt me well, brothers. Salt me well!’

Glenn Jonas, our guest this week, is a religion professor at Campbell University, whom Tripp credits partially for his relationship with Alecia. Dr. Jonas shares his insights on the life of Hübmaier, an important leader of the Anabaptist movement of the 16th century. He believes that Hübmaier’s historical significance would have rivaled Calvin’s and Luther’s had he not gotten torched.

Always good to hear from Deacon Brett Watson.

Plus, I finally get to my ‘What I’m Brewing Now’ segment. When there’s more time on the episode I’ll get into tips and recipes with future batches.

@Douglas....you clearly didn't listen to the interview. If you did you would know the 'heretic' was in jest, we praised him the entire time, and even discuss your 'truth is unkillable' quote. Thanks for stopping by to pass judgement without any context.

Shame on you for not putting "heretic" in quotes. Hubmaier is not only the one true theologian of the Anabaptist movement, but he is one of the few true theological minds of the entire Reformation. Have you not read any of his writings???? He was branded a heretic simply because he refused to recant on his position against infant baptism. And he was not burned at the stake in Vienna by Catholics, but by fellow biblically-minded Protestants. He uttered some of the most timeless and powerful words ever spoken: "Truth is unkillable!" Let that ring in your ears a while, and hopefully you will correct this pathetic representation of one of the greatest men to follow Christ in modern times. Douglas Petrovich

I loved the professor's Freudian slip when he said "Jesus said, 'There's a wide road that leads to discussion..'"
