John Cobb reflects on the relationship between the ecological crisis and the financial crisis we are in the middle of. Can these crises create the opportunity for real change? Can the change be for the better? He asks if there is an easy transition to a sustainable way of life. Has the financialization of the economy separated us from the world that sustains too much for us to imagine a better way forward without a dramatic crisis? Is the radical collapse of our financial system the most promising thing that can happen?
If our way of living is really unsustainable and things must change then it seems the church is one place that should lead in that change. If these crises are hooked together so tightly that they cannot be addressed seperately then perhaps these crises are a chance for us to come to grips with just how deep our assumptive rabbit hole goes with nature.
