That seems a bit intolerant of him, as well as hypocritical coming from someone with his experiences: those groups of people are certainly not innocent, but why shouldn't God be angry at straight white men as well? But he also said his prayer would not be Christian at all, which is the ludicrous part. His theology and experience as a bishop in the Episcopal church shapes his worldview. His experience as an openly gay minister gives him a unique standing to pray as a member of a community that has been deeply wounded recently. I doubt Warren will take a similar approach tomorrow. I doubt Robinson won anyone over with his prayer either. I don't think Obama has backed down from sharing what he believes in -- but like you said -- he's found ways to formulate his language and wording so that it still appeals to many despite whether or not they agree with the particular position. Great way of looking at this.

I can appreciate the inclusive desires of the Bishop, but I do think he ought to call a spade a spade and be what he is there to be.
