I really like Huckabee. I’m still wishing it would have been him vs Obama in November. I don’t agree with him on everything, but I don’t agree with anyone on everything — even my wife. Hopefully Huckabee will run again after he gets some more name recognition.
I think there are a couple interesting ideas/concepts that we’re all debating/arguing for/against.
I think as an American – the rights attributed to one group of people should be attributed to all. As long as those rights don’t overstep the rights of someone else. Can’t argue for prayer in public schools unless you’re willing to give everyone equal opportunity to pray how they wish. Can’t argue for censorship unless you’re willing to be censored yourself.
If the government didn’t recognize marriage as a class of people or give special rights to married couples, I wonder if this debate would even matter.
As a Follower of the Way, I’m not convinced one way or another on what our response should be – other than loving one another.
I think we should stand up for the oppressed and the marginalized. But does a government not recognizing a marriage union make you oppressed – I’m not sure. Would civil unions work just as well? I’m not sure.
I think I’d rather err on the side of accepting and loving people more than shunning them or their practices — whatever they might be.
thanks for sharing jonathan. huckabee and stewart were great because they did something many don’t do – look like good people while discussing a difficult and heated topic.
i tend to see the issue as a civil rights issue and would like it if the government just got out of the marriage biz in general. maybe it is a little bit anabaptist, but the church is much better suited to handle sacraments.
I am not gay but totally agree with Jon Stewart’s thinking. I understand that it takes a man and a woman to conceive. However, there is far more involved here than conceiving. We humans are made to be together in love. I am single, live alone and have for 31 years longing for a good mate, my soul mate. This has been denied me mostly because I want someone who truly loves me for who I am and loves God more than anything else. Possessions are not at the top of my list of what to look for in a mate. It was decided at birth, or before, that I would love men and not women for sexual activity and committed partner. Others however were born to love the same sex as themselves. No one should deny loving, committed partners to not be joined in marriage or a civil service. It grieves me that someone has to live alone and I do not think God intended that we should unless we choose to do so. I have found one man that meets every ideal for my partner but unfortunately he does not join me in wanting to have a loving marriage or close friendship. This grieves me to no end. Jon Stewart made some very good statements/arguments. Mike Huckabee may be a good man but I cannot espouse his beliefs or desires for this country. Barack Obama was and is my choice of a really great leader. I pray that same sex relationships will be recognized as geniune and blessed as my marriage was. No man is or should be an island. Unions between same sex partners should be held accountable as are unions between man and woman.
