Quest for the Living God with Elizabeth Johnson: Homebrewed Christianity ep. 17

July 24, 2008 by Tripp Fuller 10 Comments

Elizabeth Johnson is a hero of mine.  Such a gracious combination of fidelity to Christian tradition, creative exploration in Christian theology, and commitment to the church is hard to find (plus her writing is easy to read). As an aspiring theologian I tend to get theological crushes on books and her book ‘She Who Is‘ was one of those books.  Our newest podcast is a conversation I had with her about her newest book ‘Quest for the Living God.’  I had this book pre-ordered on amazon and finished two days after I got because it was that good.  You could call it a tour through contemporary currents in the doctrine of God which highlights the context from which each vision emerged, the theological rationale behind it, and the practical implications each vision has for everyday life. For those who aren't followers of events in Catholic circles, it may have slipped under the radar that there is currently a debate going on right now following the negative comments of certain bishops on Elizabeth Johnson's 'Quest for the Living God' which in many ways mirrors some of what's been going on in the wake of the publication of Rob Bell's 'Love Wins'. The language in which it's framed is quite different, but some of the substantive issues are really quite similar. What is to be welcomed is that the media haven't been able to turn this into a slanging-match, and that some reasoned and respectful discourse has been going on which isn't reducible to soundbites. Whatever your take on the questions involved, anyone interested in serious theological discussion should take a look at Elizabeth Johnson's most recent comments in response to her critics. She encapsulates the issues in a remarkably cogent and thought-provoking way which forces admiration: let's hope her ecclesiastical opponents respond with the same level of acuity and commitment to advancing the conversation in a constructive manner. Wow !!! After listening to this pod cast I am saying to myself yes !!! Yes !!! AMEN AND AMEN. At last the voice I have been waiting for has come. Elizabeth Johnson was speaking for me and I hope many others, men and women. The way she spoke of her discoveries of and with God is so refreshing. If there is any doubt that God exists I think she has helped us to understand that God is, at least to her, because she has learned from others about God but also has experienced God. I jotted down comments she made as I listened to aid me in remembering. A few that stood out for me are: 1) the vision that she had of a camp fire and those that in attendance (multiple religions, etc) telling their stories of God, is similar to my own vision, 2) seeing God and all of us at a banquet, community, bringing about a deeper and greater love than what we have known or experienced, 3) the power of the Holy Spirit that is shown in and through prayer and ritual, voicing those prayers of the poor and the powerless in story form to let the world know, 4) the language of God functions, invitation to find God at work in all of our experiences, 5) we need to listen to the whole orchestra not just Father/Son/Spirit, 6) she mentions Dorothy Soelle, who has inspired me, 7) her Trinitarian Challenge, God is Beyond us, God is with us, God is within us, God became a child on this earth, Spirit of God is at play in the world, 8) she challenges us to grow in the wisdom of God, become more aware of God in the ordinary times of our lives, listen for God, grow in relationship with God (Spiritual Maturity), 9) the greatest tragedy is "Apathy", we do not want to be disturbed, we need Prophets, 10) we need to move out, take action, become a part of our living out the love of God that we know and experienced. You must listen to the pod cast to understand my comments. Thanks to both Tripp Fuller and to Chad Crawford for introducing me to this wonderful woman. I plan to visit Amazon today and purchase a couple of her books. She and I already agree about much but I know that she will also give me some new insights. As a lay person, I really appreciate those who consider us when they are writing great books. Thank you Elizabeth Johnson !!!
