Homebrewed Christianity 11: The Illustrated Life of Paul Soupiset
By Tripp Fuller • May 28th, 2008 • Category: emergent, podcastIn this week’s episode, I chat with San Antonio artist Paul Soupiset. I blogged here about getting the opportunity to meet Paul at Ruta Maya Coffeehouse back at the beginning of April. We’ve been keeping this one under our hats for a while and I’m really excited about exposing this little bit of homebrewed Christianity to the world.
Tripp opens the show by telling stories about his cohort friend and our charismatic listener, Cathryn Thomas. He also declares his love for legendary singer-songwriter and all around Vigilante of Love, Mr. Bill Mallonee.
Paul and I talk about his illustrations in Jesus for President by Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw, his 2007 Lentenblog, his pastor Gordon Atkinson, a.k.a. Real Live Preacher, and the Prayer Labyrinth he and his church recently constructed using only native materials.
We met right after he recorded another podcast promoting Danny Gregory’s upcoming book, An Illustrated Life: drawing inspiration from the private sketchbooks of artists, illustrators and designers, which features Paul’s artwork. The book is due out in October and you can pre-order now.

Tripp Fuller is married to an awesome lady Alecia and has a handsome little baby boy named Elgin Thomas (aka E.T.) and Pebbles, the Schnoodle. He and Alecia are both graduates of Campbell University (where they met), the Divinity School of Wake Forest University and ordained ministers. He is working on his PhD in Philosophy of Religion and Theology at Claremont Graduate University. A few other things he digs are books, cigars, pipes, Shaq, guitar, pirates, fishing, the Counting Crows, and good conversations about Religion and Politics. The podcast is the most time consuming hobby he has ever had besides reading and blogging through Wolfhart Pannenberg's 3 volume systematic theology. Follow Tripp on Twitter | Tripp on Facebook

Hey. I am one of the few people on the planet who knows both Cathryn and Paul.
paul soupiset here. thanks for the interview!
Hey: funny small world story: david sims and I audio-interviewed none other than my buddy bill mallonee about 8 years ago, and spent something like 24 or 36 hours transcribing the interview holed up in an upstairs loft in lubbock, texas of all places with an old dictaphone machine and an early-generation mac laptop…

What a crazy world! I think I saw that Mallonee will be in San Antonio some time this summer. Tripp has organized several concerts for Bill to perform in different settings, one being for a student organization he started in divinity school called Table Talk. They stay in touch, and we really are going to try to catch up with him to have him on the podcast sometime soon.
alrighty now! TOOOOOOOO funny- and Tripp it was toward the end of the mtg. if you recall …. so i’m elbowing you in the Spirit AT this moment!!!!
As per the Art community… part of the reason we hooked up in Austin is b/c of Derek and Amy Chapman that are true artist and have an Art house here… with a talented crew of God loving folks that are exploring and expressing HIS heart thru the Arts….. w/o being churchy…..
Love you guys…. and Tripp THANKS …. for getting me and risking your W.S. – spiritual street cred for just perhaps God moving in a strange way.
Love overflowing! to ya all….
shalom to the deepest places
